The Canberra International Airport is the central point for flights to south eastern Australia. It also operates landing flight traffic from Melbourne and Sydney airport where weather conditions hamper landing. The airport is a mere 10 minute drive from the city centre, located in Pialligo. It opens everyday from 5 am and operates until the last flight takes off.
The airport has made special provisions for the entertainment of children. Play equipment can be found in the departures lounge and serves the needs of pre-school aged children. It is also possible to purchase colouring-in books and puzzles from the newsagent. Moreover, the Ground Café, located in the central terminal has a special range of food items such as cakes to cater to the young age group.
Check-in and boarding times can be found by contacting the specific airline with which you are traveling.
The airport does not have locker facilities, keeping in view the heightened security regulations now governing the facility. Therefore it is recommended that luggage should be kept with passengers at all times as there are no left-luggage facilities at the airport either.
For banking needs, a Travelex ATM is located on the ground floor in the central terminal building. The terminal has telephone facilities in various locations which operate on a phone card or coin basis. TTY telephones are also available for those who may require them.
Canberra airport has been undergoing upgrades over the last few years, leading to the extension of runways and the introduction of new conference and business facilities with the setting up of the Brindabella Business Park in the vicinity of the airport. Moreover, there is a large shopping facility on Majura Road.
For passengers eating and drinking needs, a good variety of cafes and bars can be found in the departure lounge serving meals and on-the-go snacks.
A currency exchange office has been set up on the lower level in the central terminal building.
Both short and long term parking is available near the terminal building. There is also a shuttle bus service that runs on an hourly basis to the city centre and leaves just outside the central terminal building. It is also possible to get a taxi to your destination of choice and various car hire companies operate their office desks in the arrivals area, although it is always a good idea to pre-book and avoid confusion about prices and terms and conditions.
